The Joy of Giving! St. John’s Charity Ball 2026
On June 27, the weekend closest to the Feast of St. John the Baptist, the Hungarian Association of the Knights of Malta organized its traditional biennial charity ball. The ball’s patron was Dr. Josef D. Blotz, Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign Order of Malta. During his brief visit to Hungary, he also had the opportunity to learn about the activities of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta, and visit a few sites.

This year’s charity goal was to contribute to the costs of domestic and international camps for underprivileged young people with mobility impairments and other disabilities. The success of the fundraising effort was aided by a multi-channel system developed over the years:  donations from sponsoring companies and private individuals, a percentage of the entrance tickets, a raffle, and donation cards placed on the tables. This helped raise tens of millions of Hungarian forints for this noble cause. And, not least, it was all accompanied by a pleasant sense of excitement and the atmosphere of a beautiful ball.

Everything came together for a wonderful evening in the beautifully decorated and superbly air-conditioned (!) halls of the Pesti Vigadó, on the hottest weekend of the year so far.

There were many young people in attendance. Several of them were debutantes, attending their very first ball. The opening dance was a beautiful waltz choreography that they had been preparing for weeks.

Seeing the more than forty decorated tables seating ten persons each, the large orchestra, and the elegance of the ball gowns and tuxedos, everyone could not help but think: how beautiful it is when form and substance—the nobility of the charitable cause—go hand in hand...

In support of the main fundraising goal, videos about the camps—which had been supported in a similar manner in the past—played continuously in the rooms adjacent to the ballroom.

But just as important were the encounters, the conversations, and the forging of new connections. This was facilitated by the fact that the guests and ball attendees had already gathered at the Opera House on Friday evening for an informal get-together.

On the Sunday following the ball, many attended a joint Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle, commonly known as Matthias Church. The members of the Order wore their church robes; Mass was celebrated in Latin by Fr. László Süllei, pastor of the Parish of Our Lady of Buda and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. After Mass, the gathering continued at the Order’s nearby House on Fortuna Street.

A ball is all about connections—connections within generations, across generations, and between those living abroad and those at home—all coming together this weekend for a common cause: to help those in need.
