Pilgrimage of the Hungarian Knights of Malta to Kassa (Kosice)
Like every year, on 17 November 2024 we celebrated the feast day of St. Elisabeth of the House of Árpád in St. Elisabeth Cathedral in Kosice. The Hungarian Association of Knights of Malta, members of the Order of St. John and many pilgrims gathered in the spirit of love and faith. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Zoltán Pásztor, HOnorary Conventual Chaplain of the Order of Malta. The pilgrimage was attended by 22 Knights and Dames of the Order of Malta and 2 Knights of St John, witnessing the strength of faith and community spirit.
In his homily (the full text of which, in Hungarian only, can be found by clicking here ), Father Zoltán Pastor gave tribute to the example given by Saint Elizabeth, emphasising the timeless message of the saint's life. He emphasised that Saint Elizabeth is the embodiment of love and selflessness towards neighbour, not only in our country but also throughout the world. In his speech, he quoted the circular of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference, which said that Elizabeth's short but blessed life has become a never-fading example. "Whatever life's circumstances, we can always help."
The messages of the homily proved particularly relevant in today's fast-paced world, where wars, materialism and indifference dominate everyday life. He recalled Pope Francis' words that the poor not only need help, but also teach us. Their example shows that the fundamental values of life are not material.
During Holy Mass, he also quoted the thoughts of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, St Augustine and Pope Benedict XVI, who encouraged us to turn with a humble heart to God, who does not abandon us. One of the most moving parts of the sermon was the recalling of the testimony of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who said that prayer is the space that gives strength to serve the poor.
At the end of the festive Mass, the participants gave thanks in a communal prayer to St. Elizabeth, who stands before us as an example of humility, selflessness and charity. The joint presence of the Knights of Malta and the Knights of St John testified to fraternal unity and the communal power of faith.
The pilgrims also took part in other special activities. They visited the House of Rodosto, where they were able to see a captivating photo exhibition by an acclaimed Czech photographer. The exhibition was about the impact of prison missions, human depths, destinies and encounters. The images evoked deep emotions and reflections, showing how faith and the connection between people can have an impact even in the most difficult situations.
The participants also had a special musical experience. László Legeza and Gy. László Kiss, prize-winning tárogató player, gave a lecture and a celebratory concert. During the performance, they not only explained the history and importance of the tárogató, but also presented an outstanding musical repertoire celebrating Hungarian national traditions and Christian values.
The pilgrimage to Kassa not only served as a celebration of tradition and a community experience, but also reinforced the participants' commitment to supporting the poor and needy. The pilgrimage reinforced in our hearts the eternal message that through love and humility we can grow closer to God and to each other.
