Passing of Pál Bolberitz, Ch.G.C.C.H.

Budapest, 25th October 2020. The Hungarian Association of the Order of Malta annnounces with deep sorrow the passing of Mons. Pál Bolberitz, Ch.G.C.C.H., after a long illness.

Pál Bolberitz was born on 15th September 1941 in Budapest. He received Holy Orders on 19th June 1966 in Esztergom. He completed  his studies at the Theological Academy of Budapest in 1968. He worked as chaplain in Szentendre in 1968, then in Szentimreváros until 1973. He then taught theology in the seminary of Esztergom until 1978, while completing two years of studies in Rome. Between 1978 and 1988 he was faculty head at the Budapest Theological Academy. He was Dean of the Theological Faculty at Pázmány Péter University in 1988-1990, 1992-1994 and 1994-1996. He fulfilled a number of other public, academic and ecclesiastical functions. He was named Papal Prelate in 1993.

He joined the Order in 1991 as Magistral Chaplain, and became Conventual Chaplain ad honorem in 1998. He was awarded the Grand Cross in 2003 for his tireless and outstanding work on behalf of the Order. He was the regular celebrant of the Order's Thursday evening Masses until mid-1019, and participated in every religious function, meeting and activity of the Order.

We will miss him greatly and remember him with affection and gratitude.
