Remembering the Order of Saint John in Csurgó

March 27, 2019. The town of Csurgó, in Somogy county - which celebrates the 1 000th anniversary of its foundation this year -  held a commemoration ceremony and conference to mark 800 years of presence of the Hospitaller Order of St. John in its midst. Representatives of the Order of Malta and the Order of Saint John were invited to take part in the celebrations, which began with Holy Mass in the Roman Catholic church of the Holy Spirit.

The church tower, dating back to the Middle Ages, preserves the memory of the ancient Order of St. John. After Holy Mass, representatives of the municipality and of the two Orders placed wreaths in front of the commemorative plaque on the ancient church wall.

A conference was then held in the main hall of the neighbouring Historical Park. After an introduction by László Szászfalvi, Member of Parliament for the district, presentations were made by Prof. Dr. József Török, Ch.C.H. on "The medieval history of the Order of St. John in Hungary and the recent return of the Order of Malta"; by István Tomcsányi, Commander of the Hungarian branch of the Johanniter Order, on "The formation of the Protestant St. John's Order and its history in Hungary";  and by Mátyás Vörös, chairman of the Sándor Baksay Foundation of Csurgó, on "The history of the Kinghts of St. John in Csurgó". The Mayor of Csurgó, János Füstös, hosted a closing reception.
